A new round of beginner classes

Yes, I am teaching a lot more lately

I hate to refer to it in the past tense. Perhaps that’s denial. Perhaps it’s just hope. When I ran the Emperor Norton Magick Social in San Francisco, people asked me for 101 classes. There were several obstacles to that back then. First, I had recently parted ways altogether with my identity as Wiccan. It doesn’t feel right to teach Wicca 101 when you realize you’re just not Wiccan. It’s like asking someone that just figured out they’re gay to go on a blind date with that lovely person of the opposite gender. Some dust can’t work anymore.

Second, finding meeting spaces in San Francisco that allowed for teaching classes was, at the time, near-impossible, especially for someone new to the city. While my community was certainly large enough to support renting a space, most were unwilling to do so, hanging on to romantic notions about teaching being free that not only ignore that the teachers have human needs but that in a city where the average rent on a one-bedroom started at $3500, renting a classroom was also prohibitive and a large burden on the teacher. Even my Minneapolis fallbacks for parks and recreation resources and libraries were beyond what I could manage. I had far more resources available to make that sort of thing happen at the time.

I am grateful that this situation has changed. Yes, the pandemic gave us all Zoom fatigue. But with the lockdowns done in the United States, it has also given us an appreciation for the ability to take a class - in our pajamas - away from winter driving conditions.

Also, when I can make it back to San Francisco, Wicked Grounds has established classroom space. It is roomy, comfortable, and great for teaching classes and has nearby access to good food and good coffee.

When I can get back - book sales and author support willing - I’ll likely be working with Mir to set up some spirit work workshop intensives.

As for today, I am finally bringing to the world something many people have asked me to provide for years: a beginning magick series. I am teaching the Elements of Magick series alongside my partner Synty and in partnership with Golden Apple Metaphysical and Elements.

All classes run 75-90 minutes on Zoom. If you sign up for a class and cannot make the initial class, a password-protected link to the replay will be made available to you.

The first of 5 classes with a bonus class starts on Thursday, October 13th, 4 pm PST/7 pm EST: Starting Your Practice.
