Resources for Texas Hill Country Flood Relief
A quick organization of resources for those who wish to donate and those who may be in need of resources
Every so often, I step outside my themes and use my (research) skills for an act of service. I don’t know anyone whose life the floods in central Texas have impacted. Everyone involved is a stranger to me. In my practice, it’s good to care about strangers.
It’s not for me to judge who deserves help, especially not in a weather emergency.
Just as the laws of hospitality are central to my spirituality and religion, showing kindness and community to my neighbors, including those who are different from me, is a necessity. (Yes, boundaries still matter too. As much as I detest Robert Frost as a person, he was right, good fences do make good neighbors.) We are all citizens of this world while we’re on it, and that gives us a degree of the social contract of the tolerance paradox with everyone.
As my act of service, I have compiled a list of resources I found for both flood victims and those who wish to donate to flood relief efforts. I'm not endorsing any of the agencies collecting funds, as the only one I’m familiar with is the Red Cross.
I am posting the resources list here, and I have attached a PDF with the same information to this missive. I reason that some older folks may prefer a PDF of the information, rather than trying to track what amounts to a website link.
A few tips before you dive in:
Most organizations at this point are requesting cash donations.
If you wish to give in kind, don’t give just anything. The needs are specific, so please listen to what the relief coordinators are saying. Adding used and unrequested items to the mix only creates more work and more stress.
When organizations seek in-kind donations, most are looking for the following:
Bottled Water
Feminine hygiene products
Diapers
Can openers (food shelves often don’t have can openers available)
Check the websites and social media pages of organizations seeking donations.
Also, please vet an organization before donating - make sure it’s legit, and that you’re comfortable with who you’re giving your money to.
General Resources and Donations for Texas Hill Country Flood Relief
As we learned last year when the Carolinas got hit by a hurricane, there is such a thing as good help and bad help. Good help is listening to the people coordinating care, and telling you clearly what they need. Bad help is sending or dumping off used goods, clothing, etc., that no one requested, which ends up making more work for people under monumental amounts of stress.
The best help right now: select an agency, and donate money. If you choose a place looking for in-kind donations, the three most overlooked are feminine hygiene products (period panties are great in these situations), diapers, and can openers. But mostly what works best? Sending cash.
The list I have here is far from comprehensive, especially since I am unfamiliar with central Texas. I hope it provides good donation spots and valuable information for those in need of a little extra support right now.
